Charismatic delights connections by winning feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 26: Fancied bay colt, Charismatic, delighted connections winning the feature event run over 1000 metres during the 12th day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

The meeting earlier was to be held last Sunday but was postponed to Wednesday because of heavy rain, which waterlogged the Racecourse.

On Wednesday the city received heavy downpour in the morning but the Lahore Race Club (LRC) employed its sanitary staff to flush out water from the track and made it fit to hold the races by the evening.

The 5-4 second favourite Charismatic, trained by Iqbal Nawab was steered by jockey Shahid Rehman.

The colt came rushing from far behind at a very fast pace and flashed past the front-running filly, Gujrat Princess at the finishing post. At one stage of the race Gujrat Princess had built up a big lead and looked to have almost pocketed the race. But Shahid Rehman guided his mount outside and continued to make effort with both hands and heels that paid off well.

Royal Destiny and Chill completed the frame among only five runners left in the field after the last-minute withdrawal of Dil Vil and Jut Bahadur. This was the sixth and last race in racing order.

Earlier in the fifth and supporting event, long shot filly Jung Frau, tipped in these columns to win made amends for her defeat last time out picking up the spoils for owner Raja Khushbakhat-ur-Rehman.

Ridden by the riding boy M. Atif, she nosed out the filly Discovery at the finishing line to get a photo-finish verdict in her favour. Run And Win finished third while the even-money favourite Royal Fish (Shahid Rehman up) could hardly make up the frameThe long shot gelding, Philosopher defeated 80 to 100 favourite Volcano, the mount of Shahid Rehman, easily to give favourite backers a rude shock, who thought Volcano just a matter of come and go to win But it was not so.

Billoo The Great and Shah Pari completed the board.

Odds-on favourite colt Gulf Line beat First Dream by half-a-length with Princess Afaq and Run For Dollar third and fourth, respectively.

The bay mare, Pretty Princess, who was conspicuous finishing off the frame in her last outing won the second race like a champion leading all the way home. She beat Stride To Moment by three lengths. The way Pretty Princess won the race strengthened the views of racing pundit that there was some thing wrong with the filly when she ran off the frame last time. Incidentally on both the occasions the jockey to rider was M. Zeeshan, a favourite of some stewards.

The opener was won by a dark horse Dashing Paradise, who made a clean dash to win the race from Tosca by three lengths. Shah Rani and My Shanga completed the board. Heavily backed chestnut mare, Issabella, missed the jump out at the start under M. Zeeshan. Was it accidental or intentional, was the question of the backers'?

Two favourites and a second favourite won in a card of six events. All races were gone over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres.

The next Lahore Summer Meeting will be held on Sunday.
