LAHORE, July 25: World Punjabi Congress (WPC) Chairman Fakhar Zaman has said Waris Shah’s language is not being properly promoted in Punjab due to bureaucratic hurdles.

Addressing the Waris Shah Seminar at the Sheikhupura Degree College on Wednesday, Zaman said that Punjabi had not been introduced as the medium of instruction in Punjab and 10,000 master’s in Punjabi had yet to get jobs despite the provincial government’s claims that it would promote Punjabi language and culture.

Paying tribute to Waris Shah, Zaman said he was a master craftsman who brought together different pictures of Punjabi culture in Heer.

Former Sheikhupura district nazim and member of the National Assembly Tawakkal Virk described Waris Shah as Shakespeare of Punjab and assured Zaman of efforts for the promotion of Punjabi.

WPC Secretary-General Afzal Shahid said that Waris Shah’s poetry provided guiding principles for all dialects in Punjab. Folk singer Shaukat Ali enthralled the audience by singing couplets from Heer.
