KARACHI, July 25: Lyari Town Council members on Wednesday slammed the police for their failure to maintain law and order in the locality and held them responsible for rising street crimes and the so-called gang war.

Naib Nazim Javed Akhter Baloch of Shah Beg-Kalri Union Council 6 alleged that the criminal elements had opened fire on the house of UC Nazim Abdul Majeed, as a result of which his brother was injured.

He said an FIR had been registered with the area police. He called for the arrest of all accused, including an ASI.

Mr Baloch pointed out that under the present circumstances no one felt secure in the locality as the police were making no effort to check criminal activities. He said that if elected representatives were not safe, one could imagine the security position of the common man.

Other council members also criticised the police’s role and urged the IG Sindh to take early and effective measures for the restoration of peace to the locality.

The meeting decided to call the TPO and all SHOs concerned of the locality to the next council meeting to seek their point of view on the deteriorating law and order situation in Lyari.

‘Propaganda purposes’

The council also took up the water issue. The members expressed their concern over the delay in the execution of the K-111 project.

Some of the members argued that the city government was not interested in the solution of the problem and it had only raised the issue for propaganda purposes.

They said the city nazim had promised to provide additional water to the residents of Lyari in June 2006, but so far the problem had not been solved.

Minority member Bhulu Devji said the ban imposed on appointments for the last 15 years should be lifted.

The meeting was chaired by the Town’s Naib Nazim Abdullah Rahim Baloch.
