Seeds Becker, Ginepri crash out of Indianapolis event

INDIANAPOLIS, July 24: Robby Ginepri and Benjamin Becker, the seventh and eighth seeds, were bundled out of the Indianapolis Championships at the first hurdle on Monday.

American Ginepri, who won the Indianapolis title in 2005 and reached the semi-final last year, was upset by 83rd-ranked Michael Berrer of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Berrer, 27, who reached the quarterfinals at 's Hertogenbosch on grass last month, lost to countryman Nicolas Kiefer in the quarter-finals at Los Angeles.

Ginepri won the first set after breaking Berrer's serve in the eighth game but Berrer raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set after breaking serve in the second game, and then broke serve again in the eighth.

The German then took a 3-1 lead in the final set when Ginepri double-faulted twice in a row to go to 0-40 and netted a volley to lose serve in the fourth game.

Eighth-seeded Becker of Germany, the only other seed in action on Monday, was also a casualty as he fell to Frank Dancevic of Canada 6-4, 6-3.

The 109th-ranked Dancevic broke Becker's serve three times in the match - in the third game of the first set and the third and ninth games of the second set.

Sam Querrey, the world No 90, ended a six-match losing streak which dated back to May with a 7-6, 6-1 first-round win over Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

The 19-year-old, who blasted 19 aces, lost only four points on first serve in the match and reversed a run of form that has seen him win just once in nine matches.

Russian teenager Evgeny Korolev made good on nine of 12 break points to beat American veteran Justin Gimelstob 6-2, 6-4 and book a place in the second round against top seed Andy Roddick.

Monday’s results (prefix number denotes seeding):

First round: Michael Berrer (Germany) beat 7-Robby Ginepri (US) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1; Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentina) beat Amer Delic (US) 7-5, 7-6 (7-5); Frank Dancevic (Canada) beat 8-Benjamin Becker (Germany) 6-4, 6-3; Evgeny Korolev (Russia) beat Justin Gimelstob (US) 6-2, 6-4; Sam Querrey (US) beat Julien Benneteau (France) 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

DAVYDENKO BEATEN

UMAG (Croatia): Gilles Simon of France staged an upset on the first day of the Croatia Open ATP tournament on Monday by beating world No 4 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

The 22-year-old Frenchman has one singles title to his name, won earlier this year in Marseille and reached the quarter-finals of the Bastad tournament last week.

Top seed and world No 3 Novak Djokovic from Serbia had an easier passage to the second round, beating Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-3.

Two other Spaniards, Pere Riba and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, managed to stay in the tournament by beating local youngster Luka Belic 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 and Gaston Gaudio of Argentina 6-0, 6-4.

Local hope Marin Cilic overcome Frenchman Mathieu Montcourt 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Argentine Carlos Berlocq beat his compatriot Maximo Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4. Cilic will meet Simon in the second round.

PENG MOVES AHEAD

STANFORD (California): China's Peng Shuai eased into the second round of the Stanford Classic with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Russia's Elena Bovina on Monday.

Peng was joined in the last 16 by Slovenian seventh seed Katarina Srebotnik, the only ranked player in action on the opening day, who recorded a routine 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russia's Olga Poutchkova.

The 21-year-old Peng played corner-to-corner against the taller Bovina, frequently wrong footing her opponent into errors with an intelligent and aggressive game honed by her new coach, former world No 2 Michael Chang.

At world No 62, Peng is China's second-ranked player and is making a comeback after suffering a serious ankle injury in early May.

Two Americans also advanced after Meilen Tu beat compatriot Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6, 6-1 and Lilia Osterloh defeated Jill Craybas 6-2, 7-5 to earn herself a meeting with second seed and Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli of France.

Greece's Eleni Daniilidou outlasted American Amber Liu 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to set up a second-round showdown against third seed Daniela Hantuchova.
