‘Cleric’s FM radio out of Pemra ambit’

PESHAWAR, July 24: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has expressed with concern that participants of some of the TV talk shows wrongfully accused the authority of granting permission to Maulana Fazlullah of Swat to run his FM radio station in Fazagat.

According to a press release, the Pemra Ordinance did not extend to the Fata and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (Pata) and matters pertaining to the electronic media in these areas were governed by the Governor’s Secretariat. “Law-enforcing agencies and Maulana Fazlullah a couple of weeks ago reached at an agreement on the radio station. In the agreement, Maulana Fazlullah promised that he would not indulge in any type of activity which was against the policies of the government, with special reference to the polio vaccination and other health services of the authorities concerned,” the press release said.—APP
