400,000 voters missing

By Abid Mehdi

SIALKOT, July 24: New electoral rolls of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) do not contain more than 400,000 Muslim and non-Muslim voters of Sialkot for they have no computerised national identity cards (CNICs).

Assistant election commissioner of Sialkot Munawar Ghuman told reporters more than 1.5 million voters were on voters’ lists prepared by the ECP in 2000.

He said over 400,000 votes could not be re-registered due to CNICs condition.

He said now over 38,500 people had got their votes registered after the ECP extended date for voters’ registration.

He said people could get their votes registered in September and October this year after producing their CNICs.

INQUIRY: Sialkot district and sessions court judge Allah Buksh Ranjha has ordered a judicial inquiry into the killing of Ghulam Abbas of Talwara Mughalaan, who was shot dead by Rangpura police in an encounter two weeks ago.

The judge appointed civil judge Javed Iqbal Warraich inquiry officer.
