Aziz, family given in judicial remand

By A Reporter

RAWALPINDI, July 21: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 here on Saturday sent Maulana Abdul Aziz along with his wife and two daughters on 14-day’s judicial remand, as the Islamabad police did not ask for their further physical remand.

The accused persons will be detained in a house declared as a sub-jail in the federal capital for their safety.

The special judge Sakhi Mohammad Kahot accepted the bail application of Tayyaba Dua, 17, the elder daughter of Maulana Aziz against the surety of Rs50,000 in the abduction case of Chinese nationals registered with the Margalla police. However, Ms Tayyaba was not released as she was also charged with involvement in other cases including the murder of Rangers personnel.

The court adjourned the hearing of the bail applications of Maulana Aziz, his wife Umme Hassan and daughter Asma Dua, 13, till July 25. The defence counsel, Hashmat Habib Advocate had moved the bail application of Maulana Aziz in a murder case registered with the Aabpara police and that of Umme Hassan and Asma in the abduction case of the Chinese nationals.

Meanwhile, the judge extended the physical remand of 13 Jamia Fareedia students for two days against the police demand of five days. Twenty-one students were sent to the Adiala Jail on judicial remand for 14 days, whereas 22 students were ordered released if not wanted in any other case.

After the hearing, the Lal Masjid cleric demanded that the chief justice of Pakistan should take notice of the missing students of Jamia Hafsa and Fareedia. He said he was forced to wear Burqa and appear on the state television for an interview. He expressed his resolve to work for enforcement of Sharia in the country.

A large number of family members of the detained students were also present on the occasion. The students alleged that they were being interrogated both by the police and the army and were forced to confess that they possessed fire arms and used them against the security forces during the Lal Masjid operation.

The court also deferred the hearing of bail application of Defence of Human Rights coordinator Khalid Khwaja till July 24 in the Rangers personnel’s murder case, as police did not produce the record of the case.
