Pakistan spikers gear up for Kolkata contest: Commonwealth Championship

KARACHI, July 19: Pakistan volleyball team will fly to Kolkata on Thursday from Lahore to compete in upcoming Commonwealth championship followed by second leg of Indo-Pak series.

Eight nations are to vie for honours in the Commonwealth event which begins from July 29. The countries include Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Canada, Pakistan, Kenya, Nigeria and the hosts India.

Archrivals Pakistan and India will be up against each other in the second leg of the series being held from Aug 7 to 14.

The first leg of the series played on this side of the border recently was squared 2-2 with home team winning at Wah Cantt and Peshawar and the visitors at Islamabad and Lahore.

According to Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF), one or two changes are likely to be made in the team that played against India. The squad will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, 17 probables are currently undergoing strenuous training in camp at Islamabad’s Liaquat Gymnasium. Bulgarian coach Stefan G. Dimitrov is supervising the training. He is being assisted by Mohammad Akram Chaudhry and Farooq Azam.

Tariq Waseem (Police), Ishfaq Hussain (Army), Kashif Mansoor (Police), Naeem Jan (Army), Mohib Rasool (Police), Naseer Ahmad (Police), Ali Abbas (Wapda), Mohammad Farooq Khan (Wapda), Mohammad Azhar (Pakistan Steel), Bakhat Rasal (Army), Sanaullah, Mohammad Zafar Iqbal, Mohammad Ali and Mohammad Ismail.
