FBR chief urges staff to tap real tax potential

ISLAMABAD, July 19: Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Abdullah Yousuf on Thursday urged the tax managers to adopt professional approach to achieve Rs1.025 trillion revenue target set for the current fiscal year.

Speaking at the concluding session of the 14th National Tax Conference, the chairman exhorted the tax managers to work with full devotion and dedication to achieve the targets assigned to them for current financial year.

Commenting on the overall revenue collection target, he said that the fixation of this huge target reflected the trust reposed by the government in the board. “We have to respond in the same spirit”, he said adding, “We have to prove that we are capable to deliver and can make the difference.”

Emphasising the need to broaden the tax net Mr Yousuf asked the revenue officers to tap the huge revenue potential exists in various sectors of the country to get the desired results.

He directed the tax officials to conduct a comprehensive study of all the manufacturing and industrial units functioning within their areas of jurisdiction, and come up with a reliable data with regards to their tax potential. “You can confront with the non-taxpayers or short-filers on the basis of authentic information,” he added.

Lauding the income tax officers for achieving unprecedented growth in collection of direct taxes in last financial year, the chairman expressed the confidence that they would work with same missionary zeal to achieve the goals of enhancing tax-to-GDP ratio and broadening the tax base.

About the introduction of Golden Handshake Scheme for the employees he made it abundantly clear that no employees would be sent home forcibly. Any of such schemes would be purely on voluntary basis and not mandatory.
