Gonzalez, Nalbandian crash out on day of upsets


LOS ANGELES, July 18: American Zack Fleishman produced the biggest upset of the Los Angeles Classic when he knocked out top seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 7-6, 6-4 in the opening round on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, ranked 162 in the world, from nearby Santa Monica edged the first set 7-5 on a tiebreak and broke his opponent in the third game of the second before sealing the biggest victory of his career in one hour and 17 minutes.

Earlier, Igor Kunitsyn played the best tennis of his career to stun fourth seed David Nalbandian 7-6, 7-5.

Second-seeded James Blake won his opening encounter 7-5, 6-4 against Alexander Peya.

Sixth-seeded wildcard Mardy Fish ended an eight-match losing streak by beating his doubles partner Sam Querrey 7-5, 6-4, and Vince Spadea eased past Thiago Alves 7-6, 6-2.

EASY START FOR NADAL


STUTTGART (Germany): World No 2 Rafael Nadal returned to his beloved claycourt surface on Tuesday and brushed aside Germany's Alexander Waske 6-1, 6-1 to reach the second round of the Stuttgart ATP tournament.

With second seed Tommy Robredo having lost on Monday, Tomas Berdych and defending champion David Ferrer are now Nadal's main rivals.

Fourth seed Ferrer, who picked up the title in Bastad on Sunday, continued his run of good form on clay as he enjoyed a 6-2, 6-2 win over qualifier Lukas Lacko and will now meet fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Third seed Berdych had no problems breezing into the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nicolas Lapentti.

Guillermo Canas won the first set against Stanislas Wawrinka, but was forced to retire after the first game of the third set with a thigh injury.

DAVYDENKO STUNNED


AMSTERDAM: Nikolay Davydenko suffered his second successive first-round exit after Florent Serra fought back from a set down to upset the top seed 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the Amersfoort Open on Tuesday.

The world No 5 was defeated in the first round of last week's Swiss Open by another Frenchman, Gael Monfils.

Second seed Mikhail Youzhny overcame Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-2, 7-5, while third seeded Carlos Moya hit nine aces to brush aside Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-3.

TOP SEEDS MOVE AHEAD


CINCINNATI (Ohio): Top seed Anna Chakvetadze got off to a quick start at the Women’s Open hardcourt tournament on Tuesday, downing Tatiana Poutchek 6-4, 6-0 in the first round.

The 20-year-old Chakvetadze, ranked eighth in the world, next plays qualifier Anda Perianu, who defeated Melinda Czink 6-3, 6-2.

Second-seeded Patty Schnyder also won her first-round match against Monique Adamczak 6-2, 7-5.

Schnyder's next opponent will be Brenda Schultz-McCarthy, who beat Catalina Castano, 6-2, 6-4.

In an early upset, Anna Tatishvili defeated fifth-seeded Aiko Nakamura 1-6, 6-4, 7-6.
