Boy, girl die of gastroenteritis

NAWABSHAH, July 18: Eight-year-old Naveed and Maryam, 18, died of gastroenteritis in Umer Gahoti village of union council Abul Hassan 45 kilometres from here and about 85 patients reported in different hospitals of the district up till Wednesday.

Around 40 cases of gastroenteritis were reported in Umer Sethar village of the same UC and about 45 were reported in NMCH and rural health centres of Daur, Doulatpur, Qazi Ahmed, Shahpur Jehanian, Karam Ali Jamali and Buchheri.

District Nazim Faryal Talpur and Naib Nazim Abdul Haq Jamali visited the disease-hit villages and made arrangements for shifting patients in serious condition to NMCH.

The EDO of health, Dr Arif Qazi, who set up a medical camp near the villages said that the area was low-lying with contaminated sub-soil water, which was the major cause of the breakout of the disease. The medical team at the camp comprising an epidemiologist, female doctors and a health education officer took samples of water and provided treatment to the patients.

DEMO: Relatives of Punhal Chandio who was killed 22 days ago staged a demonstration outside the local press club on Wednesday in protest against police for releasing a man who was accused of killing him.

Ms Haleema Chandio, mother of Punhal, said that Ali Nawaz Chandio and Hassan Ali Chandio had shot dead her son under the pretext of karo-kari in Shakal Chandio village.

Police arrested Ali Nawaz but soon afterwards the in-charge of investigation police Qazi Ahmed police let him go after receiving huge bribe, she charged.

She insisted that her son was innocent and the accused killed him when he was working in Ali Nawaz’s farm. She demanded that the high-ups direct police to arrest the culprits and provide her justice.
