LARKANA, July 14: Over a dozen inmates were injured in the central prison here on Saturday when three groups, after exchanging hot words, used sticks and stones against each other.

The groups comprise Chandios, Abros and Sangis.

Four of the injured, who were identified as Mohammed Ali Sangi, Raza Ali Abro, Irshad Abro and Mumtaz Abro, had been admitted to the Chandka Medical College Hospital, jail superintendent Abubakar Shaikh told Dawn. The other injured were admitted to the jail’s dispensary, sources said.

The clash began over a petty issue, Shaikh said. No case has been registered so far.

There are 1,350 prisoners in the Larkana central jail against its capacity to accommodate 400 inmates, the superintendent said.

The presence of hardened criminals, who had been shifted from Jacobabad, Khairpur Mirs and Shikarpur, could trigger such clashes any moment, he conceded.
