GUJRANWALA, July 14: The district consumer court on Saturday issued notices to a multinational cell phone company and highways department for providing defective services.

Complainant Malik Tajdin pleaded that a cellular company had announced some package for using SMS and when he used it he had to bear heavy financial loss due to defective service. The court issued notice to its regional manager, Haider Zaman, for July 19.

In the other case, union council nazim Atif Masood Butt complained that substandard material was being used in the construction of a road.

The court issued notice to the building contractor and highways department representative to explain their stance.

The judge, Chaudhry Muhammad Farooq, warned that stern action would be taken against defaulters.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 issued notice to a company for providing substandard mineral water.

RTA: The Regional Transport Authority has decided to release 300 motorcycles and auto-rickshaws after imposing minor fines on the drivers. These vehicles have been parked at the General Bus Stand for the last several months.

The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by the DCO and RTA chairman Athar Syal on Saturday. Rickshaw union chief patron Zubaida Ehsan, union presidents Nasir Azeem Khokhar and Ajmal Khan and RTA secretary Ishrat Niazi also participated.

The meeting was told that the motorcycles and auto-rickshaws were impounded by the RTA secretary staff during the checking of documents and impounded at the GBS as the drivers failed to pay heavy fines.

The union leaders said the RTA secretary had fined Rs2,000 to Rs3,000 for each vehicle which was too much for the poor drivers. They alleged that the vehicles were impounded to give advantage to franchised buses plying on the GT Road.
