West Indies thrash Netherlands

DUBLIN, July 10: West Indies cruised to a 10-wicket win against the Netherlands at Clontarf here on Tuesday in the opening match of the quadrangular one-day series.

Dwayne Smith set up the rout with a spell of four wickets for eight runs in six overs as the Dutch were bowled out for 80.

In reply, West Indies captain made 51 not out as his side won with more than 35 overs to spare.

Teenage opening batsman Alexei Kervezee showed some promise for the minnows, top-scoring with 22 before he was out to Daren Powell, who had taken four wickets in West Indies' one-day series clinching win against England last week.

The Netherlands top order collapsed to 67 for four before Smith began his rout by dismissing Billy Stelling. Then the pace bowler teamed up with wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin to get rid of Eric Szwarczynski (10) and Henk-Jan Mol (nought) on their way before Atse Buurman was bowled by Darren Sammy for eight.

Ramdin had a field day with five catches.

Mudassar Bukhari was caught by Gayle for Smith's fourth wicket and Sammy finished things off by removing Dutch skipper Jeroen Smits for just one run.

Netherlands, though, were clearly not up to the battle and are a few rungs down from the likes of Ireland, who make up the tournament alongside Scotland. Netherlands have a chance to put up a better showing when they take on the hosts, in Belfast, on Wednesday.
