KARACHI: Slow pace of work on road irks Korangi residents

KARACHI, July 10: Prolonged traffic jams have become the order of the day on main Korangi Road as the city government has failed to complete the reconstruction of one of its tracks in the stipulated time.

Despite the repeated orders of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal to accelerate work on the project, the contractors and authorities concerned seemed to be turning a deaf ear to these directions.

At present, the two-way traffic is running on a single track of the road. According to the plan this two-way road is to be widened to ease the traffic load.

Citizens brave crippling traffic jams on this road, especially during rush hours.

The situation is further aggravated by the collapsed sewerage system along the road, especially near Chakra Goth and the adjacent areas, due to the accumulation of drain water on the road and nearby streets.

The stagnant water is producing a foul smell as well as serving as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The area residents have complained that waterborne diseases are on the rise as sewage water is mixed with water pipelines.

They said that diarrhoea, gastroenteritis and malaria were affecting the locals, especially children.

They said many manholes were without covers, endangering motorists and pedestrians.

They demanded that the city and town nazims take serious notice of the situation and order early completion of the road, besides improving the sewerage system in the area.

Cleanliness drive

Landhi Town Nazim Syed Asif Husnain on Tuesday directed the authorities concerned that cleanliness drive should be run thoroughly so that people might enjoy a clean and healthy environment.

Inaugurating a cleanliness campaign in his town as a part of a large-scale campaign launched by the city government -- from July 10 to 24 -- he said the drive would create a sense of competition among all union councils of the town.

He warned that negligent officials would be dealt with with an iron hand.

Meanwhile, 700 tones of garbage was shifted away from C Area, F Area, Korangi No. 6 Market, I Area, A.F. Area, and UC-11. Wall chalking was also removed and streetlights cleaned and repaired.—PPI
