Post 9/11 security cost Canada $2.5bn

OTTAWA, July 9: Stringent US and domestic security measures implemented since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States cost the Canadian transport industry almost US$2.5bn, media said on Monday.

A government report, obtained by the Ottawa Citizen, outlined the financial impact on airlines, airports, railways, marine port authorities, shipping lines and trucking firms.

The economic analysis determined that the sector’s combined operating costs increased US$300-523m per year from September 2001 to April 2005.—AFP
