Prolific Phapha Kutni set to clinch Summer Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, July 7: Three-year-old bay filly Phapha Kutni stands head and shoulders above other contenders to land the Summer Cup 2007 in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Barring an exception, the filly has been on the board on the remaining five occasions including three victories of the six races she entered in during the year so far which suggest her outstanding form.

She will be on trot to make it two-in-a-row when she appears in the six furlongs Summer Cup, a term race for Pakistani bred horses, on Sunday. She comes from the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara.

In a shortest field of six aspirants she is likely to be chased by four-year-old dark bay filly Stormy Kiss and five-year-old mare Savabeel.

Five-year-old bay mare Voo Doo Doll who obliged punters by posting a facile four lengths victory under rider Ghulam Shabbir II last weekend is favourite to maintain her winning streak in the next race.

Her likely challengers are five-year-old bay Jawan Bakht and colt Wardha Love Janu.

If allowed to run on merit, three-year-old bay colt Cash Flow should claim honours in the concluding race.

He should be followed by Dragon Heart and Arab Hi Arab for the places.

Three-year-old bay filly Sweetie Pie, a stable-mate of Phapha Kutni, should dominate the opener to make it two on trot.

Similarly, three-year-old bay filly Sugar Sweet from the same connection looks certain to pick up spoils in the second while filly Rolex should make amends in the third race.

Despite being heavily backed Rolex has failed to come up to the mark in the last three outings.

A card of six races has been worked out for the day. The first race begins at 2.30pm.
