Anti-polio drive postponed

KHAAR, July 7: The political administration here has postponed the anti-polio campaign in the Bajaur Agency due to the poor security situation, an official said on Saturday. A three-day campaign was scheduled to start from July 9 (tomorrow).

Agency Surgeon Dr Chiragh Hussain Shah told Dawn that he had received directives from the political administration to postpone the polio immunisation drive across the agency because of the volatile law and order situation.

Militants have threatened to carry out suicide attacks and to target government officials to avenge the Lal Masjid operation. The administration has put security personnel in the area on high alert.

Radical elements have been protesting against the anti-polio campaign too. Agency Surgeon Dr Abdul Ghani Khan was killed in a bomb explosion in the Salarzai area on Feb 16, when he was there to promote the anti-polio campaign.—Bureau Report
