75 beggars held in ongoing swoop

LAHORE, July 6: Police on Friday claimed to have arrested 75 beggars from different city roads. A police spokesman said the city division arrested three, Ravi six, Cantonment one, Civil Lines 32, Mughalpura 20, Sadar one and Iqbal Town 12 beggars.

The police have so far arrested 570 beggars since a drive against them was launched a couple of weeks ago.

Some 40 elderly and disabled beggars and 17 teenagers had been handed over to Edhi Welfare Centre and the Child Protection Bureau, respectively, he said.

Two cops held: Two constables of the Lorry Adda investigation wing have been caught red-handed receiving bribe from a citizen.

Both the officials have been arrested on the order of the DIG investigation and a case has also been registered against them at Lorry Adda police station.

Police said a show-cause notice had been served on the Lorry Adda investigation in-charge and an explanation sought from the Badami Bagh DSP in this regard.

A case was registered against three accused, including a woman, with the Lorry Adda police station under Section 294 on July 5. But head-constable Nisar Ahmad and constable Abdul Rahman released one of the accused, Ahsan Raza, the same day after receiving Rs2,000 from him and asked him to pay Rs4,000 for the release of others.

An applicant, Rao Shamshad, informed DIG (investigation) Tassaduq Husain who sent his PSO to verify the allegation. The PSO caught red-handed both the officials receiving Rs4,000 from Ahsan Raza.

Three killed: Three people were killed in separate accidents here on Friday.
