Robles, Lysenko win in Zagreb

ZAGREB, July 5: Cuba's Dayron Robles beat season-leading David Payne for the second time this week in the 110-metre hurdles at the Zagreb Grand Prix on Wednesday. Two days after defeating the American in Athens, Greece, Robles won in 13.35 seconds in pouring rain, which made the track slippery at Mladost Stadium.

Payne won in Ostrava, Czech Republic last week, but bowed to Robles by .21 seconds.

“I feel good, I'm ready” for the Golden League meet in Paris on Friday,” Robles said. “I'm ready to win it.”

Ron Bramlett of the United States was third in 13.59.

World record-holder Tatiana Lysenko won the hammer throw with 76.74 metres, nearly two metres below her best.

“It's the world record in rainy weather,” Lysenko quipped. “I'm happy I won – that's what I came for.”

Lysenko, who increased her world mark to 78.67 metres in May in Sochi, Russia, beat two-time world champion Yipsi Moreno of Cuba, who threw 73.89 metres. The 2000 Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska of Poland was fourth on 72.91.

In the women's 800, Lucia Klocova, Slovakia upset Svetlana Cherkasova – the winner in Ostrava and Athens – by shading the Russian in two minutes, 1.56 seconds. Cherkasova timed 2:01.80, and Jolanda Ceplak of Slovenia, the indoor world record-holder and 2004 Olympic bronze medalist in 2004, finished third.

Matic Osovnikar of Slovenia ran down Gregory Bolden of the United States to win the men's 100 in 10.19 seconds.

But Americans won the women's 100 (LaShaunte Moore), 200 (Rachelle Boone-Smith) and the men's 400 (Derrick Williams).

The season's leading female high jumper, Blanka Vlasic of Croatia, won her event, and Irving Saladino of Panama won the men's long jump with the year's third best distance, 8.45 metres.
