KARACHI: Headmaster arrested in provident funds case

KARACHI, July 4: The National Accountability Bureau, Sindh, has arrested another accused for his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of Rs220 million General Provident Funds of government employees in Shikarpur.

NAB sources disclosed that the Headmaster of Government Islamia School, Shikarpur, was arrested on Wednesday. He would be produced to an accountability court on Thursday. He had also the charge of Drawing and Disbursement Officer (DDO) in the school.

Two days back, five persons were arrested in the case while two others Abdul Wahim Shaikh and Ejaz Ahmed Memon had already been remanded in judicial custody.

According to the NAB office, the arrested officers include a former manager of NBP Shikarpur branch, Ghulam Rabbani; NBP Compliance Officer, Zulfiqar Ali Shaikh; NBP Garhi Yasin branch officer, Zahid Hussain Bhutto; NBP Haathi Der branch head cashier, Ashfaq Ahmed Shaikh; and Senior Auditor of Shikarpur District Account Office, Noor Mohammad Ajan.

It was reported that the accused had embezzled more than Rs220 million of GP Fund of the government employees in 2002-03.

NAB officials said the accused had submitted bogus documents in the name of dead and retired employees more than once showing in record that final payments had been made.

“In addition, they also used documents with fictitious names and showed the GP funds enhanced in the record,” they said, adding that all the fake bills were approved by the District Accounts Office, Shikarpur.

All the accused, except Abdul Wahim Shaikh and Ejaz Ahmed Memon, are in NAB custody for interrogation till July 16.
