Man crushed under transformer

LAHORE, July 2: Residents of Makka Colony, Naseerabad, on Monday staged a demonstration against the Lahore Electric Supply Corporation after a young labourer died when a transformer fell on him.

Reports said Nasir Masih, 19, of Sheikhupura came to Makka Colony to see his relatives. As he was standing in the street along with his cousins, a car driven by a teenager, Nasir, suddenly hit a pole supporting a transformer. The transformer, which was not properly fixed on the pole, fell on him, killing him on the spot.

Soon after the incident, a large number of locals gathered on the spot and staged a protest demonstration against Lesco staff. Later, they besieged the Liberty Lesco sub-division office, chanting slogans against the officials concerned for not properly fixing transformers and other electricity equipment.

Police reached the spot and dispersed the protestors after a light baton-charge, while Lesco officials fled from the office to save themselves from the wrath of the mob. The police also took the car driver into custody but later released him, terming the incident an accident.

MURDER: A man was shot dead allegedly by two people over a minor issue in Baghbanpura on Monday.

Police said Yousaf of the Shahzor Pir Darbar area admonished Raza Pathan when he was beating a teenager. The elders interfered into the matter and reconciled between them.

Raza, who nurtured a grudge against Yousaf, invited him by phone on the pretext of some work. As soon as Yousaf came out of his house, Raza and accomplice Zahid Jutt, riding a motorcycle, opened fire on him, leaving him injured.
