BAHAWALPUR, July 2: Most of the newly-laid sewer lines, built allegedly with substandard material in one of the biggest katchi abadis of Tibba Badar Shair, were swept away in the two-day rain over the week end.

A large number of residents of the locality on Monday protested against the Tehsil Municipal Administration and the contractor and demanded action against the people responsible for substandard construction.

They urged the district nazim to probe the matter and order immediate repair of the collapsed system.

According to the protesters, the new sewerage system was commissioned about a month ago. They alleged that as the substandard material was used in the construction, the system could not bear the pressure of rainwater and scores of joints came off as a result of which it choked. The overflowing water damaged the newly built roads as well as graves in the nearby graveyard.

Meanwhile, rainwater was still accumulated in many low-lying areas in the city. People themselves were making efforts to pump it out as the TMA sanitation staff was missing from their office.

The TMA failed to drain out stagnant water from the premises of the district courts.

SUTLEJ: About 7,000 cusecs water was flowing in the river Sutlej near the city on Monday.

When contacted, Abdul Majid Bhatti, executive Engineer, irrigation, Bahawalpur, said the water was coming from Balloki-Sulemanki link (BS link), from where the Punjab irrigation authorities had now increased the discharge from 21,000 cusecs to 26,000 cusecs.

Meanwhile, with the river full of water, a large number of people rushed to the railway Empress Bridge to have a glimpse of it.

RESULT: According to an Islamia University result notification issued on Monday, 31 of 59 candidates were declared successful in the MA Education second annual examinations, 2006.
