KARACHI: Opposition slams nazim over ‘rude behaviour’

KARACHI, July 2: Opposition leaders in the City Council Saeed Ghani and Rafique Ahmad on Monday strongly criticised City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal for, what they described as, “his uncivilised behaviour’ with the people and nazim of UC-5 Jamshed Town during his recent visit to the town on Sunday.
Mr Kamal had visited parts of the town to inspect and assess the damage inflicted by the recent rainfall. Some localities in the town were submerged in sewage as the main storm water drain stood chocked and the consequent spillage not only polluted the localities but also enter the houses around.
Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club here, the opposition leaders alleged that the city nazim’s behaviour with the local residents and the UC Nazim, Imran Baghpati, appeared insulting and highly uncivilised.
Mr Baghpati, told journalists: “I, along with the town nazim, Javed Ahmad Khan, welcomed the city nazim to our town on Sunday.
The people affected by the sewage deluge had gathered there and they started narrating their woes. They complained to the city nazim about the inundation of their houses and held the city government responsible for the situation as it had failed to carry out proper and timely cleaning of the storm water drains and clearing of sewage conduits.” The UC nazim claimed that the city nazim got provoked by the flurry of complaints and started abusing them.
Reacting to the people’s anger, Mr Baghpati added, the city nazim asked the city government officials accompanying him to stop work in this a rea. “However, managing director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board intervened and persuaded the city nazim to calm down,” he said, adding that the MD later took the city nazim away along with him.
Mr Ghani condemned the city nazim for turning rude with people, and linked his attitude with that of the armed men who had resorted to attacking the UC offices in Gadap Town on June 30.
