King Of Mehran can make it two in a row at KRC today

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, July 1: King Of Mehran has the potential to make it two on the trot when the Gymkhana race meeting resumes at the Karachi Racecourse on Monday.

“The KRC hierarchy has decided to go ahead with the programme of six races by excluding The Monsoon Cup and The Prime Minister Cup,” a spokesman for the KRC told Dawn on Sunday.

The track that was submerged due to rains the other day was cleared by 2.00pm on Sunday for galloping.

According to the programme, the first race begins at 3.00pm.

The races are being held after a fortnight as it could not take place due to windstorm and rains that caused huge damage to the premises.

King Of Mehran posted two-and-a-half lengths victory under rider Ghulam Shabbir II on May 16 after finishing off the board on seven occasions.

Only Kat Mandu and Be Jamalo appear sound in a pack of 11 runners barring last minute withdrawls, to pose serious challenge to his supremacy.

Five-year-old bay mare Voo Doo Doll who seized third place in her last outing after five dismal runs looks certain to make amends in the supporting event.

Her likely challengers are five-year-old bay Jawan Bakht and chestnut Sharp Cat.

Five-year-old bay Powerful Gambler is our fancy in the fourth race of the day. He finished good second in last three races and in all probability should rule the field.

He is likely to be chased by Hamza Joy, Sweet Grandy and Moment To Moment II.

If all goes well nine-year-old bay Daruwala should reign supreme in the opener. He was beaten by Romeo by half length on June 17. He should be followed by Gul Bano and Tom Cruise.

Five-year-old dark bay The Choice Of The Day is poised to repeat his winning feat while nine-year-old Jaguar should atone to previous losses in the remaining two races.

Meanwhile, the Racing Committee was carrying out their job well to have fair racing.

However, in race No 196 Riaz Mohammad, rider of colt Lucky Step Junior, a form and public fancy well-backed horse, was suspended for three months and fined Rs30,000 for ‘unsatisfactory riding’ as the horse finished off the board.

This connection has been penalised on a couple of occasions in the recent past for in and out running of their horses and needs to be keenly watched.
