Karachi races cancelled for second week running

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, June 30: Heavy rains that reoccurred on Saturday once again compelled the Karachi Race Club (KRC) hierarchy to cancel the Gymkhana race meeting scheduled for Sunday.

‘Yes the races have been cancelled as the entire track and its surroundings are submerged under water,” Syed Ali Akbar Shah Rashdi told Dawn from the racecourse where he was supervising repairs caused due to storm last week.

Rashdi said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz who called on the KRC patron Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara at the Kingri House on Saturday was supposed to grace the Prime Minister Cup at a special invitation.

The Prime Minister, he said, has expressed concern at the damages in KRC and was to announce special grant.

The Prime Minister Cup and the Monsoon Cup were added to the original card of six races making it eight at the last moment.Rashdi disclosed except for the stable area, repair work has been carried out.

He said the next Gymkhana race meeting will take place on Wednesday, weather permitting. A new handicap will be taken out for the meeting.

The last races were a couple of weeks ago on June 17.
