KARACHI: Lawyers seek withdrawal of cases against politicians

KARACHI, June 29: An All-Parties Lawyers Convention has demanded withdrawal of cases against politicians and asked the government to let the former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif return to their country.
Some resolutions were approved unanimously at the convention, which was organised by National People’s Lawyers Forum Sindh President Mushtaq A. Awan at his office on Friday.
People’s Lawyers Forum President Shahadat Awan, Islamic Lawyers Forum President Syed Abdul Waheed, Pakistan Muslim League (N) Lawyers Wing President Arshad Khan Jadoon, Jamiat Ulema Pakistan Lawyers Wing President Zubair Ishaq, National Lawyers Forum leaders Abdul Qayum, Sindh National Front Lawyers Wing President Hassan Mehmood Jaffery, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Lawyers Forum President Naheed Afzaal and Pakistan Democratic Party Lawyers Wing President S.M. Altaf addressed the convention.
Some other lawyers, including Mohammad Bakhsh Lashari, Iqbal Aqeel, Ghulam Musafa, Sadiq Tanoli, Shaukat, and Chaudhry Abdul Sattar, also took part in the discussion and gave proposals.
The resolutions, approved unanimously on the occasion, demanded the independence of the judiciary, restoration of the constitution, withdrawal of all cases against the Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson, Benazir Bhitto, and the Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chief, Mian Nawaz Sharif and release of PML (N) leader Makhdoom Javaid Hashmi.
Besides, the participants demanded resignation from President Pervez Musharraf in the country’s interests and a neutral caretaker setup representing all the four provinces to hold fair, free and impartial elections through democratic norms.
The civic issues like power crisis, water scarcity, sewerage and rain-related problems also came under discussion and the stakeholders held the provincial and city governments responsible for the deteriorating situation.
The lawyers also decided to hold meetings with the leaders of various political and religious parties.
