KARACHI, June 28: Months of neglect and the monsoon downpour have turned Gulistan-i-Jauhar into a junkyard as the city government and the cantonment board have dug up roads for laying water and sewerage lines, making traveling a nightmare and security risk.
The roads cutting across Gulistan-i-Jauhar from the University Road to Pehlwan Goth, on the one hand, and from Rashid Minhas Road to the Race Course via Jauhar Chowrangi, on the other, are particularly dangerous and full of potholes. “In fact, calling them roads will be a big joke,” remarked a resident.
The unattended potholes have become more dangerous after the rains and many people have been injured in accidents here. But neither the city government nor the Faisal Cantonment Board have done anything to make them motorable.
The Faisal Cantonment Board is spending millions on developing a park in Block 17 of the locality but no urgency has been shown in repairing the damaged roads. The city fathers are more concerned about taking credit for initiating the so–called development projects but are least bothered about how many people had become sick by inhaling the piled up dust. They are also not bothered about filling the trenches which pose a serious danger to the people, especially women and children, living in apartments on either side of the road.
