KARACHI, June 27: The Site and Orangi town councils passed tax-free budgets for the year 2007-08 on Wednesday. The total outlay of Site town’s surplus budget is Rs524.997 million and it puts expenditure at Rs523.697 million, showing a surplus of Rs1.3 million.
Town nazim Izhar Ahmed presented the budget at the council’s meeting which was presided over by naib town nazim Badshah Khan.
The major chunk of revenues, i.e. Rs326.400 million, has been allocated to development while a sum of Rs180.271 million set aside for non-development expenditure, including staff salaries.
Mr Ahmed told the meeting that a managing grant of Rs220 million would be acquired
for the town which would receive around Rs180 million under the head of property tax levied on each transaction of immovable property. An amount of Rs124 million would be generated from other sources, he added.
He announced that a ‘civic centre’ in the town would be constructed and said that the construction work would be started after a formal approval from the competent authority.
The Civic Centre would have a police station, bank branches and offices of other organisations, besides the town administration offices, he added.
Orangi Town
Abdul Haq, Nazim of Orangi Town, presented a balanced budget showing a total outlay of Rs475 million at the budget session of the town council. Naib Town Nazim Shahid Bashir was in the chair.
An amount of Rs277.23 million (58.36 per cent of the total outlay) has been earmarked for development while a sum of Rs147.70 million has been set aside for non-development expenditures.
Giving details of development projects, Mr Haq said that Rs10.79 million would be spent on the construction of main roads, footpaths and stormwater drains; Rs97.50 million on various development projects in the 13 union councils of the town and Rs10.6 million on parks and playgrounds. He said construction of five parks had been undertaken by the administration out of which three had since been completed.
A sum of Rs60 million has been allocated for the Citizen Community Boards.
He told the meeting that the town would get Rs410m from Octroi Zila Tax and Rs15m on account of its share in property tax. The other receipts were estimated at Rs23.45m. He said that the work for construction of an alternative route to Orangi Town was under way whereas work on a flyover at Banaras was being started.
