Indian deputy speaker visits PA

LAHORE, June 26: Indian Parliament’s Lower House Deputy Speaker Charan Jeet Singh witnessed the proceedings of the provincial assembly on Tuesday.

Surraya Naseem was replying to assertions of Saghira Islam when Speaker Afzal Sahi announced the arrival of Mr Singh in the house gallery.

Deputy Opposition Leader Rana Sanaullah welcomed Mr Singh, followed by Nazim Shah, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Farzana Nazir and Dr Waseem Akhtar.

Greeting the visitor from India, Minister for Law Basharat Raja briefed Mr Jeet about the ongoing debate on the 2006-07 supplementary budget statement in the house.

Mr Singh remained in the gallery for sometime. Later, accompanied by his family, Mr Singh met Mr Sahi at his chambers.

Mr Sahi said the exchange of parliamentary delegations would help create friendly atmosphere to resolve issues to ensure a durable peace in the region.

Mr said the exchange of delegations would help bring people of India and Pakistan closer, adding that he had great love for people of Pakistan, especially Punjab. Later, Mr Sahi presented a shield to Mr Singh.
