JHANG, June 26: There are about half a million unregistered voters in Jhang district.

This was told at a workshop organised by Civic Education Network (CEN), Jhang, on Monday at a local hotel.

CEN District Coordinator Fazal Abbas Sadhona said according to voters’ lists available with the office of the assistant election commissioner (AEC), there had been a decrease of half a million registered voters since 2002 general elections instead of an expected increase in the number.

CEN national coordinator Mr Zafarullah Khan, who had come from Islamabad, advised political workers to visit the AEC’s office and go through the lists thoroughly to get the missing names registered.

ACCIDENT: Three people were killed and 26 injured, six of them seriously, in an accident near Melhowana Mor, 18km from here on Jhang-Multan Road on Monday night.

Reports said a coaster No. (JA-6033) was on its way to Mari Shah Sakhera from Jhang. Near Melhowana Mor, it collided head-on with an Islamabad-bound bus (JA-3355). The bus driver was trying to overtake another bus. Coaster’s passengers Khalid Masood, 26, was killed on the spot while Safdar and an unidentified person succumbed to their injuries at the DHQ hospital.

Of the injured, six of them — Sarfraz, Jamil, Sarwar, Asad, Fazal Ghulam Shabbir and Muhammad Sajjad — were admitted to the DHQ hospital in a critical condition. Police have arrested both drivers Javed Iqbal and Rabnawaz and registered cases against them.
