DADU: Police book 11 students, arrest five

By Our Correspondent

DADU, June 24: Jamshoro police have booked 11 and arrested five students of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) on charges of extorting money from the vice-chancellor and the director of students’ affairs.

The director, Dr Khadim Hussain Lakhiar, registered an FIR against Shahabuddin Arain (MBBS final year), Lal Shahbaz, Zafar Arain, Adil Memon (4th year student) and Jamil Ahmed (CMC Larkana) and seven other students. Police arrested all the five and put them behind bars.

Shahabudin told Dawn that the students had staged a demonstration in the campus demanding facilities in hostels but the administration had them arrested after using batons to disperse the protesters.

But Mr Lakhiar insisted that the students who belonged to different political organisations had asked for Rs75,000 to arrange for a political gathering. When he refused, they broke furniture, windows, chairs and the doors of vice-chancellor secretariat and his office, he said, adding that he had handed over to police copies of their application in which they had demanded extortion.

LUMHS vice-chancellor said that only five per cent students were creating law and order problems at the university. If any student created hurdles for the administration or was found involved in illegal activities, he would be punished, he warned.
