KARACHI, June 23: Mohammad Ashfaque did Pakistan proud when he finished on the podium by securing the bronze medal in the Laser Standard class at the Al Bareh International Regatta which ended in Bahrain on Saturday.

According to the information available here, Ashfaque who was lying fifth overnight, climbed to the third slot by attainting second position twice in the last two races.

The winds were strong and Ashfaque, a heavy-wind sailor, found it easy to grab two second places which enabled him to finish overall third.

Samei Koheji of Bahrain secured gold while the silver went to Algeria’s Taher Salman.

Mohammad Ashraf had to be content with the ninth position in the Laser Radial class, won by Bahrain’s Abdel Rahim.

Abdul Rehman also failed to improve, finishing 13th in a fleet of 15 boats in the Optimist class. The gold in the Optimist class went to Qatar’s Hasan Tamimi.

In the Laser 4.7 class Asian silver medallist Waleed Sharsani of Qatar came from behind to win the gold.
