GUJRANWALA, June 23: Over 200 buildings, including 100 schools, have been declared dangerous by district monitoring teams while the administrations of four towns and three tehsil of the district have issued notice to owners of run-down buildings for demolishing or repairing them before the start of the monsoon.

Source said there are 100 dilapidated buildings in the interior of the city and four towns — Khiali Shahpur, Nandipur, Aroop and Qila Dedar Singh – and Naushera Virkan, Kamoki and Wazirabad teshils.

These buildings have not been repaired by their owners since long. Many such buildings were left by the Hindus and Sikhs during partition but their new dwellers did not reconstruct or repair them.

The district administration and City District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha took serious note of the run-down building at a meeting which was convened to review arrangements for the monsoon season.

Mr Chattha directed the administration of the four towns and three tehsils to take strict action against the owners of dilapidated buildings for not demolishing or repairing them.

Monitoring teams also declared more than 100 buildings of educational institutions dangerous in the district.

The Punjab government has tasked the National Logistic Cell (NLC) with building schools under the Chief Minister’s Education Reforms Programme. NLC District Manager Shehar Yar Khan said earlier 26 school buildings were declared dangerous which were subsequently demolished and reconstructed for Rs140 million. He said the government released Rs75 million for school buildings.
