ISLAMABAD, June 22: The government on Friday allowed clearance of smuggled vehicles on 30 per cent redemption fine, besides payment of duty and taxes.

An official announcement issued here said that the facility would be available till June 30, 2007. Thereafter, such vehicles will be confiscated out rightly.

The smuggled vehicles with non-tampered chassis or vehicles imported in violation of the Import Policy, excluding trucks, buses and their chassis were allowed to be cleared under the scheme.

It is clarified that trucks, buses and their chassis, whether smuggled or imported in violation of the policy already stand excluded from the redemption fine regime.

The decision was announced in the budget that tainted import of vehicles utilising redemption fine started adversely affecting lawful imports as well as local industry. Keeping this in view to provide protection to local industry, the facility was restricted now only to June 30, 2007.
