Waiting for sunrise on year’s longest day

A GIRL spins a plastic hoop during the summer solstice celebrations at Britain’s ancient Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire as a large number of people wait for sunrise on the longest day of the year on Thursday. Summer solstice occurs on June 21 when the sun is at its highest. Revellers wearing antlers, black cloaks and oak leaves huddled at the Heelstone — a twisted, pockmarked pillar at the edge of the monument — to cheer the rising sun. English Heritage, which runs the site, said the number of people gathered exceeded 20,000. It said there was a very good atmosphere but sunrise was not very spectacular this year because of the cloud. — AFP
