HYDERABAD: JI leaders slam UK govt over Rushdie issue

HYDERABAD, June 21: A large number of Jamat-i-Islami activists here on Thursday staged a protest demonstration outside the press club on the conferment of knighthood on the enemy of Islam, Salman Rushdie and the murder of former councillor of Al-Khidmat group, Mohsin Khan in Karachi.
Speaking on the occasion, the Jamat-i-Islami leaders Abdul Waheed Qureshi, Shaikh Shaukat Ali and others demanded of the British government to withdraw the conferment of knighthood on Salman Rushdie as he was the enemy of Islam.
They criticised Pakistan government for treating the matter casually and raising only mild protest. They said, the federal government was also patronising the perpetrators of May 12 Karachi carnage. They wondered why the MQM was silent on the issue of Salman Rushdie.They demanded that the murderers of Mohsin Khan should be arrested without delay.
Ad-hoc lecturers: A large number of ad-hoc lecturers staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday against non-regularisation of their services and denial of salaries to them for the last five months.
Speaking on the occasion, the leaders of the ad-hoc lecturers action committee, Altaf Dahraj, Shafi Mohammad Shah, Masood Rajput, Zulfiqar Kolachi and others said that a summary for the confirmation of their services was awaiting clearance at the chief minister house as a result of which, they had not received their salaries for the last five months.
They demanded that the services of ad-hoc lecturers should be regularised and 741 families be saved from starvation.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL: Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Yousuf Suleman announced on Thursday that the last date for renewal of membership of the chamber had been fixed as June 30. He said that no further extension in the date would be granted.
