Aisam advances in Wimbledon qualifiers

LONDON, June 20: Pakistan's top tennis player Aisamul Haq moved a step closer to entering the main round of the Wimbledon Championships by advancing into the third round of the men's singles qualification matches.

Playing at the Bank of England Sports Ground at Roehampton, South London, the 27-year-old Lahore player knocked out Hector Ruiz Cadenas of Spain 6-1,6-2 in the first round.

Earlier on Tuesday, he continued to display fine form to eliminate Poland's Michal Przysieny in the second round by 6-2,7-6 to keep himself on course for a place in the main round of the prestigious event commencing from June 25.

Aisam's best performance at the world's top tennis event was in 2002 when he lost in the men's doubles third round. He is currently ranked 259th in the world circuit. —APP
