KARACHI: IG vows to rid Karachi of arms

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 19: The newly appointed Inspector General of Sindh Police on Tuesday vowed to launch a deweaponisation drive and bring drastic changes in the existing police system.

Addressing a news conference at his office, IG Ziaul Hasan Khan said: “Our priorities include maintenance of peace, prevention of crime and protection to the lives and property of people. We have felt that unlicensed weapons is the major cause of public unrest and violence and a stern action in accordance with the law is needed for deweaponisation,” he said.

The ambitious police chief said: “We will launch a campaign against unlicensed weapons very soon.”

However, when his attention was drawn to a statement of the Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Home Affairs, Waseem Akhtar, about the proposed amendments in the law instead of launching any deweaponisation drive, the IG said: “Definitely, we will consult the provincial government before taking a final decision about the campaign.”

Mr Khan said it came to his knowledge that people were facing problems after the operations and investigation wings were separated. “We have started working on it and we will bring about changes in the system,” he said. Asked if the existing police system imposed five years back had failed to deliver, the IG said: “We will try to improve the existing system by introducing favourable changes.”
