KARACHI, June 19: The Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Home Affairs, Waseem Akhtar, on Tuesday ordered the officials concerned to take strict measures to check highway robberies.

A strategy was being chalked out to enhance police patrolling on the highways, he said while talking to a delegation of transporters, which called on him.

The delegation led by Karachi Goods Carriers Association comprised Sindh Goods Truck-Trailer Association members Ashiq Hussain Khan Niazi, Malik Javed Awan, Alhaj Malik Ahmed Khan, Malik Sher Zaman and others.

The delegation apprised the home adviser of growing incidents of robberies on the Northern Bypass and the Super Highway, particularly of goods’ transport. They said bandits used to loot goods worth millions of rupees and in some cases hijacked vehicles.

They said some bandits stabbed to death a driver and cleaner on June 14.

Mr Akhtar said all possible steps were being taken for the protection and security of transporters. He said action had been initiated for the recovery of hijacked vehicles and against the police officials, who were backing criminals. He said that criminals would be dealt with iron hands.

To chalk out a strategy to curb highway robberies, a meeting would be held on Wednesday. Besides the officials concerned, he said, the goods transporters would also invited to attend the meeting.—PPI
