SWABI, June 18: Those people who do not get their names registered with the Election Commission as voters by the deadline at the 50 electoral roll display centres of the district may not be able to vote in the upcoming general elections, according to an official of the commission.

He said the formulation of the computerised electoral rolls was in full swing. “We have made all arrangements to facilitate eligible voters to visit the display centres and to get their names registered as voters,” said the official.

Announcements in this connection were being made through loudspeakers in each locality and leaders of political parties and civil society organisations were requested to help in educating the people about the registration process, he added.

The official said that eligible voters should file claims, objections and applications for registration of their names as voters on or before July 3. The process was kicked off six days ago.

To redress the grievances of the public, the staff of the election commission were working day and night, the official said. The people could get the necessary information at the display centres.

Meanwhile, the district Baitul Maal would distribute Rs41 million among 13,665 destitute people of Swabi district, said District Nazim Shahram Khan.

Speaking at a function here on Monday, he said that a large number of needy people in the area deserved attention of Baitul Maal and the government would ensure fair distribution of the amount among them.

“Only the ‘mustahqeen’ will be provided assistance and recommendations of nazims or leaders of political parties will not be entertained,” he claimed.

Kafayatullah, the district Baitul Maal officer, said that only the registered people would get the money at the rate of Rs3,000 per head. The Baitul Maal had already told the people to get their names registered.

Instead of banks, the payments would be made through the post offices.

He said if his staff continued to work with the current speed the whole process would be completed within 10 days.
