KARACHI: ‘Robber’ killed in shootout, two held

KARACHI, June 18: An alleged robber was gunned down and his two accomplices were arrested after an encounter with police in Site on Monday. Three suspects were standing outside a bank branch. As police approached, they escaped in narrow streets of the locality. An alert message was immediately aired on wireless network.

Spotting the suspects on the run, a police party signalled them to stop. However, the suspects opened fire at the police. The fire was returned wounding all the suspects. They were being shifted to a hospital when one of them, Akbar Ali, 25, succumbed to his wounds. His two accomplices Shahid Shabbir, 30, and Abdul Rehman, 28, were seriously injured. Police arrested the two suspects and recovered unlicensed arms from their possession.

The police said that the suspects were allegedly involved in robberies.

ACCIDENT: A 12-year-old pedestrian was knocked down by a van in Sector 37-B, Landhi No 89, on Monday.

Police said Waqar Ali was crossing the road when he was hit by the van. Police arrested the driver and impounded the vehicle.

DETAINED: Police detained three watchmen in Mithadar area.

The Mithadar police registered a case (142/07) on the complaint of Syed Danish Mian that locks of 17 shops were broken and prize bonds worth millions of rupees were missing. The police took Mateen, Sajjad and Akram, all watchmen of the area, in custody for interrogation. However, no clue to the theft has been found by the police so far.

TEAM DISPATCHED: A man, who had killed his son and injured other family members on Sunday, could not be arrested till Monday evening.

However, a police team tasked with his arrest is being dispatched to Multan, the suspect’s native town.
