KARACHI: NAB references against three officials

By A Reporter

KARACHI, June 18: Three more references against senior government officials were filed by the Sindh NAB in the Accountability Court on Tuesday. According to the NAB, the officials include an executive district officer (EDO) of the city government and two bank officers. They are accused of causing a loss of Rs64,293,124 to the national exchequer.

The first reference was filed against Shariq Ilyas, former EDO in the city government’s literacy group of offices.

According to initial investigations, the accused had in 2002 selected two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) under a literacy programme called the Education Sector Reforms Programme (ESR), sponsored by the federal government, without the approval of the district coordination officer or the city nazim.

The NGO was to open 150 literacy centres. The accused in connivance with other officials had allegedly misappropriated Rs9,181,825.

Another reference was filed against Latif Baig, a Grade-1 officer of the National Bank of Pakistan, Rahimabad Branch, and 13 others for misappropriating an amount of Rs41 million, causing a loss to the bank and the national exchequer.

The last reference was filed against Mudassir Ahmed Khan, a junior officer/cashier of the PICIC Commercial Bank, Malir branch.

The accused being entrusted with the property in the way of his business as banker reportedly committed the offence of breach of trust and misappropriated Rs14,111,299.
