BAHAWALPUR, June 17: A non-governmental organisation (NGO) has recommended the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to enlist students of seminaries as voters on the forms attested by their teachers.

A recommendation to this effect was made to the ECP at the concluding session of a workshop organized by the Pakistan Institute of National Affairs (PINA) here on Saturday night.

About 50 teachers of seminaries of three districts — Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan - participated in the workshop.

The PINA, an NGO, also proposed the ECP that the polling staff, including presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers should also be drawn from madressahs for the upcoming general elections.

It also suggested that interim electoral rolls should widely be publicised and displayed so that the missing people could register their names as voters.

Addressing the participating teachers, PINA chief Altaf Hasan Qureshi said thousands of seminaries’ students failed to enlist themselves as voters by right of marked lack of interest by their teachers.

Seminary teachers assured the PINA chief that they would send their adult students for registration as voters.

SHOT DEAD: Two brothers along with their three nephews shot dead their father and injured a stepbrother near Uch Sharif on Sunday.

Reports said that deceased Syed Faqir Hussain wanted to transfer the land in the name of his second wife’s sons. Hashim and Hakim, sons from deceased’s first wife, along with their nephews opened fire on their father and stepbrother Zamir. Consequently, their father died on the spot while Zamir sustained serious injuries.

Police have registered a case against the five absconding accused.
