KARACHI: Restoration of constitution key to ending crisis: Qazi

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 17: A revolution is inevitable to do away with the present system of oppression and to enforce an economic system based on justice.

This was stated by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) chief, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, while speaking at the ‘Shahadat Conference’ organised by the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) here at Shahrah-i-Quaideen on Sunday.

The event was organised by the IJT to pay homage to their colleague Wasif Aziz, president, Muttahida Talaba Mahaz (MTM), who was reportedly killed by terrorists.

Speaking on the occasion, the MMA chief said that the murder of the MTM leader had once again disturbed the tranquillity of the city and termed the murder of Wasif Aziz and Hashmat Bangash continuity of May 12 carnage. People had recognised the terrorists and were fed up with the present autocratic rule and would not allow re-election of President General Pervez Musharraf at all, whether in uniform or without it, or his allies as they had put the sovereignty of the country at stake, he said.

Referring to the ongoing crisis in the country, the MMA leader said that the only way out of the current situation was restoration of the Constitution and an end to dictatorship through free and fair polls. He, however, ruled out the possibility of transparent election in the presence of President Musharraf.

Pointing towards the discrepancies in the current voters’ list which does not have the name of former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali enrolled, Qazi demanded of the government to make use of the database prepared by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and prepare the list on the basis of CNICs.

Mamnoon Hussain, Niamatullah Khan, Naeem Qureshi, Siddique Rathore, Abdul Rasheed, Mairajul Huda Siddiqui and others also spoke. A message from the mother of late Wasif Aziz was also read out to the audience.

Meanwhile, the MMA chief also addressed a press conference at Quba Auditorium, where he criticised the statement of US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Boucher. He said that the military uniform was a major hurdle in holding free and fair elections in Pakistan.

He also announced that in the coming election MMA would make seat to seat adjustment with any party. The JI leader said that their alliance would participate in the muti-parties conference (MPC) to be held in London.
