Security situation discussed

ISLAMABAD, June 16: Admiral William J. Fallon, Commander-in-Chief of US Central Command, called on President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Saturday and discussed with him the prevailing regional security environment with particular reference to Afghanistan and the ongoing war against terrorism and extremism.

The US Centcom chief expressed deep appreciation of the US and coalition forces over the excellent cooperation extended by the Pakistan armed forces vis-a-vis operations against international terrorism.

He termed his meetings with senior leadership of the Pakistan armed forces as excellent, says a statement issued by the ISPR.

Welcoming Admiral Fallon President Musharraf gave an overview of the measures which have been taken by the government and Pakistan Army for improving the security situation along the Pak-Afghan border.

The president also informed him of the comprehensive steps which have been taken to curb the spread of extremism and terrorism in Federally Administrated Tribal Areas.

US Charge d’Affaires Mr Peter Bodde, Chief of Staff to the President Lt Gen (Retd) Hamid Javaid, Director-General Joint Staff Lt-Gen Syed Athar Ali and other senior officials were present during the meeting.

Later Admiral Fallon called on Gen Ehsan Ul Haq, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee at Joint Staff Headquarters, and discussed with him matters of mutual interest.
