Zanjeer to prove strength by pulling off another victory
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, June 16: Four-year-old roan gelding Zanjeer who registered a facile win on his last outing will be on the trot to make it two in-a-row by landing the feature event of the seventh day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
The son of Polinesso out-of-Blend Of Kamal, Zajeer is contesting in the sixth and last race of the day, contested over 1100 metres.
Till recently, the gelding was known as a middle distance runner, but he established his credentials as a sprinter too by winning the race.
The increase of 100 metres in the distance, although he has been placed on top of the handicap with nine stones and four pounds, goes in his favour.
Charismatic, Royal Fish and Great Murad should fight for places among eleven contenders.
Simbi, Jung Frau and Gold Medalist are the pick of the eight drawn for the supporting and fifth event which will be contested over 1000 metres.
Filly Simbi is placed at the bottom in the handicap. The way she had won a race, she is favourite to emerge victorious again.
Jung Frau and Gold Medalist should be three-year-old Simbi's challengers.
In this race former national hockey skipper Munir Dar has fielded three contestants, namely, Julia Robert, Gold Medalist and Janu.
In the presence of over four chance animals among a dozen runners, the fourth race looks an open affair.
On chance are: Remember You, Charming King, Tyson and Striker. Since the contestants are running horses, have won a race each and placed on the board too, they have an equal chance to win. However, on recent form, the first three named look favourite.
The third, second, and first events, all class seven events are loaded with form runners, at least five or six in each.
It will be a tough task for punters to pick winners. On recent showing, Gold Round, a three-year-old filly from Bedouin Invader seems to be best on handicap in the third race.
Three-year-old colts Araafa and Houstan on bloodline are the best among fourteen acceptors left in the second race.
Araafa has been sold and will be running in the silks of the new owner.
My Shanga, Lucky Coin and Dogar Gift come next on form. But their performance is always inconsistent and unpredictable likewise those drawn in the first race, an event mostly comprising unknown pedigree animals.
The first race will be held at 6pm.
