Nazim vs bureaucracy

Published June 16, 2007

MUZAFFARGARH, June 15: District Nazim Sardar Qayyum Khan Jatoi has alleged that the district administration is not cooperating with him in the preparation of the budget.

Talking to Dawn here on Friday, the district nazim threatened to move the court if the district administration prepared the budget without his consultation.

He said that funds for development projects in the district had not been released for the last two years.

Mr Jatoi said he had moved the Lahore High Court (Multan bench) last year when the Punjab government did not release uplift funds. The judge had also suspended district naib nazim Sayed Ali Raza Shamsi for not cooperating with the court last year. He said the matter was still in the court.

He alleged that the Punjab government had made two attempts on his life because he had defeated PML-backed candidate Tehmina Dasti MNA in the election for the district nazim slot.

The district nazim said if something happened to his life, the murder case should be registered against Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi.

He said the district government had stopped the payment of his utility and other bills while no official was ready to comply with his orders. He said he was being punished for his affiliation with the PPP.

When contacted, DCO Dr Akhtar Nazir Warraich said he was cooperating with the district nazim in the preparation of the budget. He said he had asked all the union council nazims to submit him their development schemes.

He claimed that all the bills of the district nazim had been cleared. — Correspondent
