KARACHI: Power cuts continue

Published June 16, 2007

KARACHI, June 15: There was no let-up in power outages in the city on Friday as the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) resorted to at least three cycles of power cuts spread over 1 hour 30 minutes each.

Despite government announcement of no load-shedding after midnight, in many city areas consumers braved power cuts and were forced to spend sleepless night.

It would be pertinent to mention that the KESC’s Bin Qasim power plant was still unable to operate at optimum level as electrical fault of Unit 5 had not yet been rectified and the refurbished Unit 4 had not yet reached the desired generation level.

However, a KESC spokesman denied load-shedding after midnight and claimed that outages could be due to cable faults. While KESC officials promised improvement in generation, Karachiites in many areas were still suffering power outages of up to 6 to 8 hours daily.

These power cuts are not only causing great inconvenience to the citizens especially during the sizzling summers but also badly affecting commercial activities in the economic hub of the country.

The situation in rest of the province is not different and people have demanded of the government to tighten the noose around the KESC and HESCO.
