KARACHI: Karachi gets Rs3.9bn for development projects

KARACHI, June 15: The Sindh government has earmarked Rs3.942 billion for Karachi under the head of annual development programme (ADP) in its budget for the fiscal 2007-08 presented to the provincial assembly here on Friday.
The amount would exclusively be for the construction of roads, improvement of water and sewerage system, flyovers and bridges and provision of sports facilities.
A huge amount of Rs550 million has been allocated for the construction and rehabilitation of various city roads; Rs75 million for the rehabilitation/construction of 21 roads under the CDGK’s Phase-II, Rs633.635 million as Sindh government’s share towards Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project; Rs50 million for the Karachi Mega City Project (technical assistance); Rs100 million for constructing a link road between the Hawkesbay Housing Scheme No. 42 and the Karachi Northern Bypass, Rs50 million for the widening of Sharea Faisal from the Finance and Trade Centre (FTC) to Metropole Hotel, Rs30 million for improvement and construction of roads from Chakra Goth to Korangi Town, Rs200 million for the rehabilitation and improvement of University Road, Rs150m for improvement and rehabilitation of Haider Ali Road and Saba cinema roundabout, Rs100 million for the construction of roads in Bin Qasim and Landhi towns.
An amount of Rs138million will be spent on the construction of Shahrah-i-Qadhafi between Qasba Morr and German School, Gulshan-i-Bihar, Orangi Town; Rs66 million for an improvement of road between M. A. Jinnah Road’s Taj Medical Complex section up to the Preedy Street and in front of Advanced Radiology Centre, Sadder; Rs75m for reconstruction of Maulana Shaukat Ali Road from Sabri Chowk-2, Raja Tanweer Colony, Orangi Town; Rs5 million for Karachi Mega City Sustainable Development Programme; Rs30 million for the construction of road between Jauhar Morr and Jauhar Chowrangi in Gulistan-i-Jauhar; Rs60 million for Azeempura Road, Shah Faisal Town; Rs50 million for the construction of service road on both sides of Mauripur Road between Gate No. 1 and the other end of the truck stand; Rs50 million for improvement of Road-4300 and construction of storm water drain from Road-5200 to Lyari River; Rs100m for construction and improvement of rural areas of the city district government Karachi (different district councils).
FLYOVERS/BRIDGES: A sum of Rs250 million has been earmarked for the construction of a flyover/interchange at Banaras Chowk which also includes four pedestrian crossings bridges; Rs60 million for the construction of a bridge over Lyari River connecting Surjani Town with Gulshan-i-Maymar, Yousuf Goth, Super Highway; Rs60 million for a bridge over railway line in Block 10 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal. WATER SCHEMES: The amount earmarked for undertaking different water and sewerage-related schemes includes Rs100 million for providing water supply to Baba and Bhit Islands and Salehabad of Manora, Rs19.5 million for construction of water supply scheme for the Quaid-i-Azam Public School link road, Rs300 million for providing and laying of water supply line from Hub Reservoir to Hawkesbay Scheme No. 42 and Baldia Town; Rs45 million for laying a 54-inch dia pre-stressed new Pipri main and 54-inch dia RCC Haleji conduit along the proposed Mehran highway (from Cattle Colony to PQA road network), Rs140 million for laying and joining of 24-inch-dia MS pipeline from Hub reservoir to German pumping station, Orangi Town; Rs70 million for improvement of sewerage system by laying different sized pipelines in union councils No. 3, 4, 6 and 8 in Liaquatabad Town; Rs20 million for improvement of water supply lines by repairing old pipes in UC-6 (Ramswami and Ranchorr Line) in Saddar Town; Rs20 million for improvement of water supply by laying pipelines in UC-3 of Liaquatabad Town; Rs 25 million for replacement of old/damaged/encroached upon main, sub-main and internal water supply lines; and improvement of water supply system in UCs 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 in Shah Faisal Town; Rs10 million for replacement of 12-inch-dia water supply by laying pipes of different sizes at Sheedi Village Road, Tannery Road for the improvement of water supply of Lyari Town, Rs40 million for construction of small dams in rural areas falling under the jurisdiction of the city government.
The other schemes for which allocations have been made under the ADP (on-going schemes) are: Lyari Development Package (Rs80million), setting up of cultural complex including a model library at North Nazimabad (Rs35 million); conservation and improvement of old Free Mason Lodge/setting up of wildlife museum; setting up of a mini sports stadium at Saudi Ground, Saudabad (Rs5 million); five sports stadiums to be constructed at different places (Rs15 million); construction of a pavilion and seating facilities for football stadium in Baldia and a boxing arena in Lyari (Rs5 million); and construction of mini sports stadium, water sports, etc in Malir Town’s US-6.
